Topsail Island Historical Society Screening "Wild Caught" About Sneads Ferry Fishing Struggles

Onslow County Property Tax Exemption Application Deadline Approaching

Property Tax Exemption Application Deadline Approaching

(Onslow County)   June 1, 2010 is the deadline for Elderly/Disabled persons and Disabled Veterans to apply for the property tax exemption for the 2010 tax year.  Applications may be obtained at the Onslow County Tax Office, 39 Tallman St, Jacksonville, NC, during the hours of 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Applications are also available on the internet at http://onslowcountync.gov/tax/srcitapp.aspx .

North Carolina excludes from property taxes the greater of twenty five thousand dollars ($25,000) or fifty percent (50%) of the appraised value of a permanent residence owned and occupied by a qualifying owner.  A qualifying owner is an owner who meets all of the following requirements as of January 1 preceding the taxable year for which the benefit is claimed:
  1. Is at least 65 years of age or totally and permanently disabled;
  2. Has an income for the preceding calendar year of not more than $27,100;
  3. Is a North Carolina resident.
Income is defined as all other monies received from every source other than gifts or inheritances received from a spouse, lineal ancestor, or lineal descendant.  For married applicants residing with their spouse, the income of both must be included, whether or not the property is in both names.

Honorably discharged disabled veterans or an unmarried surviving spouse of an honorably discharged veteran who sustained a permanent and total service related disability may be eligible for an exclusion of the first $45,000 of assessed value. There is no age or income requirement for the Disabled Veteran exclusion, but the residency requirement does apply.  Applications must be filed by June 1, 2010.

Operation Inasmuch in Sneads Ferry Saturday, May 1, 2010

On Saturday, May 1st, 2010, churches across North Carolina will go out to touch their Communities with the love of Jesus Christ.  Many of the Churches of Sneads Ferry are joining in these efforts by conducting a wide variety of ministry projects to help people in our Village.

Some of the projects done last year were: Yard Work; Window Cleaning; Power Washing; Minor Home Repair Projects; Handicapped Ramps; Car Checks, visit with the elderly …. plus preparation of meals for the workers.  The event was a wonderful experience for both the workers and those who were touched by their kindness.

We look forward to even greater things this year !!  So come out, get involved, give your ideas and go out and make a difference in someone’s life.

How can you get involved ??

1.  Pray for God’s Blessing for this event.

2.  Volunteer your time and get your Church involved.

3.  Submit information about a person(s) who needs help.

4. Come to the planning meeting at North Topsail Shores Baptist Church, on Old Folkstone Road, Monday evenings, 7pm.

5.  All Volunteers will meet at Salem Baptist Church, on Sneads Ferry Road on Saturday, May 1st, 2010, 0830 - 0900.

Sneads Ferry NIP ralley slated for Tuesday

If the incorporation referendum passes May 4, 2010, Sneads Ferry will be paying not less than .10 cents per $100 of property valuation. The Interim Council proposes to provide four services: fire, solid waste removal, zoning and street lights. Some local voters are still on the fence how to vote.

Law enforcement authorities are searching for a man that may have been trying to abduct children in Hampstead and possibly in other parts of both Pender and New Hanover Counties. This man may be wearing a ball cap, mid 40s with mustache and stained teeth.

With the upcoming vote in May 2010 on placing the referendum on the ballot for the November 2010 elections, early support for NIP is shown on the Sneads Ferry News Facebook poll (see Where do you stand on Sneads Ferry Incorporation poll).


As of the time this article was written, the poll showed 100% against Sneads Ferry Incorporation with strong statements against additional taxes. The poll has only been online for a few days and it only represents those on Facebook and mostly in the Sneads Ferry, North Carolina region.
