Craigslist Legal Issues

Craigslist Legal Issues

In the recent past, Craigslist.org has made headlines in the legal community with a Chicago based lawsuit, filed by the Chicago Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights, in February of 2006. The plaintiff in the case states that Craigslist violated the Fair Housing Act by publishing discriminatory statements in posts related to renting and selling housing.

In November of 2006, a judge decided that Craigs list could not be held accountable for the publishing of discriminating statements that violated the Fair Housing Act. The judge stated that the Communications Decency Act categorized Craigslist as a computer service that could not be held responsible for the postings of its respected members. Due to this fact, Craigslist.org is not considered as a publisher under the Fair Housing Act. Instead, Craigslist.org is considered as a service that allows the distribution of such content because the service has total control over all of the content while still retaining respect for the authors desires.

After this certain judge, Amy St. Eve, made her ruling on this issue, the Chicago Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights filed an appeal on the subject matter. While the issue is still in the appeal process, Craiglist remains completely confident that the lawsuit will be dismissed.

Keeping Christ In Christmas

As the end of the year draws near, people are running to the malls and stores to do their shopping. Each is trying to find the perfect gift for family and friends. Now I'm rather certain there are plenty who will read this post that do not believe in God or Jesus Christ. For those who believe this way and choose not to participate in Christmas, your beliefs are your own.

For those who profess to believe in Jesus Christ and do not stop to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, please do so. I hold the belief that God gave us his only son to show us the important things of this world. I often see how science continually locates "missing pieces" of history further proving specific segments of the Bible.

Last night I stayed up late to see the Geminids meteor shower which helped reinforce my belief in God and how much he must care for us to provide so much.

I ask each of you reading this post to stop a moment and remember what this season is all about. Remember the closing of one year and the beginning of a new. A most of all do unto others... It makes for a great way of life for us all!

Watching The Geminids From Sneads Ferry North Carolina

Last night my younger son and I went outside to watch the stars. The "special reason" for this was to see the yearly occurence of the Geminids meteor showers. As I understand it, the Geminids return each year somewhere around December 12-14 with one of the most dramatic meteor showers to be seen throughout the year.

It seems they arrive from the Gemini constellation which is just left (e.g. North) and down of where Mars shines in our night sky. Last night's show was spectacular.

Living near the water gave my son and I a fantastic opportunity to watch as the shooting stars came by as often as 2-3 per minute. Of course, some where brighter and longer lasting than others. Cloud cover has mostly dissipated making it easier to spot them in so many directions similar to watching a tremendous fireworks display. Who better than God to offer such a fireworks display?

As my son decided he was getting tired and returned inside, I refilled my coffee cup, kissed him goodnight, regrouped and went back out. It dawned on me how seldom we stop to really appreciate such things. This was the first meteor shower I had really taken in such as this. With this realization, I lay in the truck bed gazing at the stars and enjoyed what was placed in front of me thinking life is good...

Prior to all of this I had tried to contact friends and let them know about the upcoming event. As I understand it, some made plans to watch. I only hope they got as much out of the show as I.

December 7, 1941 - A Day That Shall Live In Infamy

Living next to a large US Marine Corps base (Camp Lejeune) and growing up learning about WWII, I hold a special place for those who have served and died to protect our freedoms. As we are locked in the struggles around this world, let us not forget the past and the resolutions that have been achieved.

On this day decades ago on December 7, 1941 the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. (see US Nave military history site)

Our world has changed and we are responsible. We no longer fight the Japanese and many of the earlier prejudices have long since been diminished. Maybe through due diligence and learning about each other we can do the same working with todays foes.

Only time will tell...

Lo-Re-Lei Pub & Grill

Recently, I have had the pleasure of visiting Lo-Re-Lei Pub & Grill here in Sneads Ferry, North Carolina just off of Hwy. 210. At first glance you notice this bar looks to be built in a shed. Actually it is more bar than grill but, the food is quite delicious!

There is a wide variety of people who show up in Lo-Re-Lei's from all ages of locals along with a mixture of Marines from Camp Lejeune and tourist from Topsail Island.

This bar has all the basics including a stage for band or karaoke, electronic dart boards and a pool table. Once inside you will notice an entire wall covered with photo's of prior events.

Prices are extremely reasonable for great tasting meals, drinks and even the entertainment. If you are ever around Sneads Ferry, NC then I urge you to give Lo-Re-Lei Pub & Grill a chance. You may be very surprised!

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA TO SCREEN “EXECUTION” FILM

THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA TO SCREEN “EXECUTION” FILM

EX-DEATH ROW INMATE, WILLIAM NEAL MOORE, STARS IN FILM AND WILL SPEAK

NEW ORLEANS, LA – OCTOBER 24, 2007 – Screen Arts Film & Media Series, The Department of Communication Studies at UNC-CH, and the Carolina Performing Arts will host a unique Filmmakers Forum and Screening of the film "EXECUTION" at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at Carroll Hall 111 on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The event is part of the year-long project “Criminal/Justice: The Death Penalty Examined,” sponsored by the Carolina Performing Arts.

This event will begin with the gritty death penalty film “EXECUTION,” which has captured the attention of people across America and around the world. EXECUTION is the story of two filmmakers who in 1995 hid cameras in the death chamber and recorded a man’s execution by electric chair. The warden confiscated their footage and hid it from the public for ten years until it was finally returned. EXECUTION is the only film to star a real death row priest, warden and ex-death row inmate. Following the screening, director Steven Scaffidi and star of the film William Neal “Billy” Moore will discuss the film and its controversial reception at festivals and screenings around the world. At the forum, audience members will have an opportunity to ask the filmmakers questions, as well as voice their own opinions on the controversial issue of the death penalty.

Billy Moore was on Georgia's death row for sixteen years and at one point only seven hours away from his own execution in electric chair. He is the only man in America ever to be released from death row for a capital murder he was convicted of and had admitted to. He was freed as a result of the efforts of his victim’s family who actually forgave him for his crime and spoke on his behalf at his parole hearing.

“Most people don’t know anybody who’s on death row. So all they know is what they hear in the paper, and what they’ve seen--how bad and how terrible death row inmates are. But when they see me and listen to me, that changes things.” said Billy Moore.

The film also stars, Dr. Donald Cabana, one of the most recognized wardens in America and bestselling author of the book “Death at Midnight: The Confession of an Executioner”. His 1996 memoir details the pain and confusion of having to carry out executions. He spent most of his time as the warden and director of the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, at one time one of the country's most corrupt and inhumane penitentiaries.

"I've personally carried out and have been a part of many executions," said Don Cabana, "and this film takes the audience closer to the actual execution process than any film that's ever been made."

This one-time-only Filmmakers Forum and Premiere Screening of the film "EXECUTION" is free and open to the general public and all students seventeen years of age or older. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and limited seating is on a first-come / first-served basis. For more information, visit the film’s website at www.executionfilm.com.

"EXECUTION" is produced and directed by New Orleans native Steven Scaffidi of Ghost Rider Pictures and is represented for distribution by Tulchin Entertainment of Los Angeles, California. www.medialawyer.com

Who Do You GoodSearch For?

Imagine if every time you logged on and performed an online search, you earned money for your favorite school or charity. With each search you launch on goodsearch.com, approximately 1 cent goes to the charity or school of your choice. I requested the addition of Dixon Middle School.

You simply select an organization from a database of thousands or add your own, then tell all your friends, tell them to tell their friends and so on. If 1,000 people with the same charity search twice a day for a year, the charity earns $7,300.

Wanting to harness for mankind some of the money advertisers throw at search engines (approx. $6 billion last year), founders Ken and JJ Ramberg partnered with Yahoo!

Will North Carolina Government Help NC Commercial Fishing Industry?

If you have read or know anything about the North Carolina fishing industry and the fishermen, you already know about the downward spiral of their businesses. Recently, I read another important article in the Fayetteville Observer titled Our View: Government can help save our state’s dying fishing industry.

When you think of the support given farmers (another group having a hard time), why does it not make sense to help in similar fashion our state's commercial fishermen? To me, it makes perfect sense to work towards preserving an industry that supports the local economy as well as bring us much better tasting seafood than the imports ever can!

Please take a moment to read the article in the Observer and, if you agree, contact your governmental leaders to state your opinion. The politicians work for us and need to know what we want for our great state.

The choice is yours!

Allergies and Some Relief?

As I was searching the web taking care of business, I noticed an online advertisement that caught my attention unlike so many others.

So often in the Sneads Ferry area, if you visit a doctor's office, you will see several people there with allergy problems. This is especially true during the Spring and Fall seasons as our beautiful real estate releases its pollen, mold, etc.

Well, today I noticed an advertisement for NASONEX where you can receive a free bottle (30 day supply) and you can get $10 off your next prescription. *By signing up online at https://www.nasonex.com/nasx/application?namespace=coupon&event=tds_coupon you can be eligible to receive another $10 off each subsequent prescription for a year.

As a NASONEX user, I understand the need for the product and I also understand the cost! Hopefully, this may help provide some relief for you.

9/11/2001 - Do You Remember?

As another anniversary of that September 11th tragic day rolls by, I am reminded of the US soldiers who are around the world standing for us. For those of you who may not vividly remember the events of that day, here is another news site with the details of 9/11/2001.

For me, it doesn't matter if you support George W. Bush or not. It doesn't matter if you feel we need to pull our troops out today, tommorrow or sometime in the far distant future. It does matter that we all learn from those events and find a way to make things right for all.

Do I remember? Yes, I certainly do remember that day all too well.

At the time, I was located in one of the tallest buildings in Richmond, Virginia near the Federal Reserve Bank. When the first communications came across the news channels, our work area had received word via email that problems were going on in New York. One of our prior co-workers had just moved there and was working within a few blocks of the Trade Center.

When the second plane hit the tower, we were all concerned what other tall buildings would be under attack. Then we would see first hand what could happen...

Working with the Virginia Department of Transporation in the computer area, we had online access to the videocams overlooking the Virginia roadways. When the Pentagon was struck, a cam on a nearby bridge was knocked over and hanging by its cords upside down. It was then facing directly along the back of the plane looking right straight into the Pentagon where it crashed. This was one of the most sobering sights I have personally witnessed.

Please understand there are thousands of people that have been affected much more than I due to these events. Many died. Others traumatized for life. And yet, others go on with their lives picking up the pieces and recovering.

Let us never forget the trauma that has occurred nor, let us forget to say thanks to the heroes of those times who were willing to risk so much for so many.

911... Never forget!!!

Commercial Shrimping & Fishing Fading In Sneads Ferry

Recently, there is another article speaking about the demise of commercial shrimping and fishing in the Fayetteville Observer titled Sea Change: The demise of N.C. shrimping. If you want to better understand the plight and feelings of today's commercial fisherman, this is an absolutely must read.

Sneads Ferry North Carolina real estate by the waterfront of the New River and the Intracoastal Waterway is going up pricewise almost daily. The commercial fishermen and other workers are having an extremely difficult time raising enough money just to live where they have been for years. Condos, townhouses and expensive waterfront and waterview homes are driving up the cost of living and taxes leaving them no where to go.

Bourne Ultimatum Movie

The Bourne series has been a great hit to many people since The Bourne Identity was first out in theaters.

It all started out with The Bourne Identity. The agent who has no past but has only his code name. How will he go on with life? He fights and kills just for information about his past. He was abandoned by the FBI just because he was a test for training. He meets a girl from Tredstone and bonds with her just like James Bond but not just for the love. Tredstone is only a secret society formed by the FBI and used agents for killing people for a reason. She helps him out because first of all, he is being hunted by the FBI, and because she knows that he is going through a hard time with his life.

After that, The Bourne Supremacy made its way to theaters. Jason Bourne is still hunted by the FBI but has a way of knowing what they are going to do before they do so he is prepared. Sometimes he scares me just by spying on the FBI and I think that he might get sniped. He always know what he wants and is going to get it no matter what. Personally, I loved that movie as well as The Bourne Identity. Matt Damon plays Jason Bourne in The Bourne Ultimatum.

In my opinion, Matt Damon has done a great job playing Jason Bourne. Matt Damon has done a great job in other movies as well. He is a character of determination and willing to get objectives done. The Bourne Ultimatum is now playing at Jacksonville Theatres which is where I watched it for the 1st time.

In the new movie, The Bourne Ultimatum, Jason Bourne finds a man who has information about who he needs to see for information about his past. He tries to protect him but the man has no patience and is shot in the head by the FBI. (as you can tell, the FBI doesn't want Bourne to know anything about his past) Jason finally finds the man who he needs to find by the help of his girlfriend from the last two movies. He finds what he needs and everyone is left of at the end set up for another movie. We'll see what they do about Bourne (Damon)

Prepare For Hurricane Season In Sneads Ferry

The old-timers in Sneads Ferry can tell you lots of stories about the damage hurricanes have inflicted. They have seen the wind, water and downpours that others shudder to even think about. Being prepared can make this hurricane season easier and much less freightening.

Known in the 1950's as "Hurricane Alley", the eastern coast of North Carolina is a prime target for hurricanes year in and year out. As detailed in the Want to know about hurricanes? (article in the Times News), hurricanes with names like: Bonnie, Charley, Diana, Emily, Floyd, Fran, Gloria, Hugo, and Isabel have left their mark on our area. Let's not forget Hazel and the destruction it left so many years ago.

What you can do

Preparing by gathering information and resources can prove quite useful in such an event. Some suggestions:

  • Write down important name & phone numbers (emergency contacts).
  • Store canned foods, water, etc.
  • Store flashlights, batteries, and candles with matches or lighter.
You may want to purchase hurricane lamps and add a nostalgic flavor from a reputable antiques dealer.
  • Locate a safe place for high winds, etc.
  • Prepare plans so the whole family knows what to do.

There are many other steps you can take but, the important part is to plan and communicate. Your family and friends may thank you for it when the time comes.

Public Service Announcement - Sneads Ferry Schools Are Open

School has begun this week at Dixon Elementary School, Dixon Middle School and Dixon High School. Please keep an extra eye toward young children along the roadways before and after school. Also, please slow down and be alert when driving through the school zones.

New Beauty Shop at Sneads Ferry

Beauty at the Beach is a new beauty shop that just opened in Sneads Ferry on the main highway (hwy 210) behind the Shrimp Shack between "Four Corners" and North Topsail Beach. Owned by Mary Hoffer, Beauty at the Beach is a top quality hair & nail salon with expert beauticians who see to it that the customer is completely satisfied and always comes first.

I've had the personal pleasure of having Mary Hoffer cut my hair with delightful results. Having very fine blonde hair, it is very easy for a barber to leave gaps and mistakes when cutting my hair. This has never been the case at Beauty at the Beach!

I would strongly recommend anyone wanting a quality professional haircut while at Topsail Island or Sneads Ferry to visit Beauty at the Beach.

Recently, the Southern Comforts business was issued a Temporary Restraining Order ("TRO") as the first steps in a civil nuisance abatement case from Superior Court Judge John Nobles {see PDF at http://www.co.onslow.nc.us/main/media_releases/mr_070206b.pdf}.

Defendants named included: John R. Lawler and Ann M. Lawler (owners), Reynold Lewis and Reynold Enterprises, LLC (tenant/operator).

Similar to Paradise Landing, these steps seem to be moving forward to closing another business that the residents of Sneads Ferry have been after for quite some time.

Seven People Arrested In Nightclub Raid

If you haven't already heard, the Sneads Ferry area is cleaning up its image in a big way. Check out the Jacksonville Daily News article Seven People Arrested In Nightclub Raid. According to locals along with the news article, there are already zoning violations being looked into along with the inappropriate acts identified in the arrests. The community citizens have made several steps forward prior to the recent elections and, just maybe, the results are what they desire. Also check out the thread on the Sneads Ferry section of ENCToday forums.
