Sarah Catbagan Needs A Heart Transplant
Sarah is a 16 year old who is currently in need of a heart transplant. She is being treated at the University of Virginia Children's Hospital.

Sarah is currently a sophomore in high school and would like to go to college to pursue a degree in criminal justice.

Please help give her a second chance by donating to her family to help with mounting hospital bills and to have a Heart Transplant!

Stops will include J&K's Full House, Bottoms Up Sports Bar, Brass Pelican and return to Lo-Re-Lei's. Poker hands will cost $10.00 or 3 for $20.00. Door prizes will be awarded. We are hosting a wonderful mulimedia artist Phillip Jarrell, who wrote "Torn Between Two Lovers" with Peter Yarrow. With 30 yrs in photography and many music cd covers, mag covers, a new guitar, Jarrell Guitars, Phillip is living in Shangahi,China now! Also designer of large banner photos in German airports featuring the Olympics in Beijing.
Due to Phillip's parents being from Eden, NC and his birthplace of Ft. Jackson, SC he chose a southern location to house his first US show with the encouragement of his cousin, Diane Kendrick, Professor & Arts Coordinator of Averett University, of Danville, VA. Phillip was going to have a joint show one here and one in Shanghai but with the earthquakes in China he delayed his show until after the Olympics. He hopes to have his show in the Grand Theatre in Beijing! Phillip was pleased with our opening! He sent us videos welcoming us to his show on July 1st. Quote: In 2007 Phillip calibrated with the "Shanghai Chinese Opera Costume Institute" on a book project, which is now being used in a number of fashion universities around Chinese. Phillip is the only credited photographer for the 160 page book, in titled, "Colorize". In 2007 Phillip also Calibrated with Sarah Foster, a very talented art director, at Getty Images, to create a collection of dramatic, action images, some of which were targeting the topic of the 2008 Olympics. The idea was to work in colleage, making giant people, in the modern city of Shanghai, achieve impossible feats. Sometime a keen to Alice in Wonderland. These two projects gave birth to the technical skills and the creative work flow that would become, what is after 30 years of working as a photographer, Philip's first every art exhibition. The work will show in Shanghai, China, and Sneads Ferry, N.C., simultaneously. Opening July 1, 2008. So actually these costumes are made by students of the "Shanghai Chinese Opera Costume Institute". And in the video you can see some of the designers helping the models to get into the costumes, and putting on the make up. In most cases the designers are also designing the make up. BIOGRAPHY OF HARVEY D. BRADSHAW, June 2008
This is Harvey’s first show of his photography

Harvey D. Bradshaw was born in his grandparents' home on Old Folkstone Road in Sneads Ferry, Onslow County, North Carolina on August 25, 1932, in the heart of the Great Depression. He is a 10th generation descendant of Alexander Grant, who came to America from Grantown-on-Spey, near Inverness, Scotland, in 1691. Alexander had jury duty in Swansboro, Onslow County, NC, on July 4, 1732, the year George Washington was born.

For the first six years of his life Harvey and his mother lived with his grandparents, James Benjamin and Bettie Dixon Grant, and his bachelor uncles, Percy Granville and Hubert Leon Grant. His mother's youngest brother, Sterling Dixon Grant, and his wife, Edna Murrell Guthrie Grant, lived nearby and had four children--Betty Claire Grant Allison, Eric Dixon Grant, Elfleda (Tillie) Grant Shepard, and James Murray Grant--who became more like brothers and sisters than cousins. His natural father, Harvey Deakins Bradshaw, 28, of Decatur, Alabama, had died of rheumatic fever in Atlanta six months before his birth. His mother, Velma Grant Bradshaw Moore, married his stepfather, Paul Milton Moore of Green Wreath Farm at Bruce, west of Greenville, Pitt County, North Carolina in 1938.

Harvey had a perfect attendance record in the first grade at Dixon School (named for his grandmother's family) and was a mascot for the graduating class of 1937. He attended Falkland School in Pitt County through the eighth grade and graduated with honors from Greenville High School in 1950. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a Naval ROTC scholarship, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in June, 1954, with a BA in journalism.

He accepted a commission in the United States Marine Corps, finishing as honor man in his platoon at The Basic School at Quantico, Virginia. After flight school at Pensacola, Florida, and Corpus Christi, Texas he was awarded his "wings of gold" as a Naval Aviator June 22, 1956.He has two sons, Paul and Toby.

Harvey served the Marine Corps for 26 years, retiring as a Colonel/Chief of Staff at Cherry Point July 31, 1980. He flew 306 combat missions in Vietnam in 1967, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and 23 Air Medals. He commanded Marine Fighter/Attack Squadron115, the "Silver Eagles" in Japan, Okinawa, and the Philippines in 1974-75. He commanded Marine Aircraft Group-31, with six F-4 Phantom fighter/attack squadrons and support units, at Beaufort, SC, in 1976-77. He was honored as Marine Corps "Aviator of the Year" in October, 1977.

After his retirement in 1980, Harvey developed Fairlane Farms on property he inherited in Greenville. He moved back to Sneads Ferry in the mid-1980s, developing Grantwood, a subdivision on Everett's Creek some three miles from where he was born, where you could hear the ocean when the surf was high on Topsail Island. The development is dedicated to 300 years and 12 generations of the Grant family in Onslow County. The streets are named for family members, beginning with Alexander Lane and down to Bridget Lane, named for his first grandchild, Bridget Louise Bradshaw, 17, the daughter of Toby and Moira Carr Bradshaw.
Harvey has continued his lifelong interest in writing and photography, culminating in a photo safari to Zimbabwe, Africa, with Toby, Moira, and Bridget in July 2007 when these images were captured.

John K Echo:

John was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He spent his summers with his country grandmother; picked beetles off of potato plants and dropped them into a jar of kerosene, mucked pig pens and crushed oyster shells for the chickens.

He continued his inspiring education at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute as assistant photography editor. (The editor could take better pictures than he could.)

After complete victory over public education, he joined the Navy and became a photographer, photographing such things as the launching of the nautilus and the sinking of the Merrimack.

Some years after leaving the navy he received a B.A. in physics and art. He finally started his career with a large company and became a senior research technologist and retiring as a senior production artist. John’s wife, Virginia, has a B.A. in music and a masters for English. Virginia’s musical skills have given inspiration to John’s artwork.

Art and photography have always been a way of life with John. He has won rewards both for art and photography.

John and Virginia retired and moved to North Carolina, in the 90’s; he was inspired by the state’s many moods. This show displays John’s love of North Carolina.

Most of John’s photographs are photographed from a jet-ski or a motorcycle. These vehicles allow John extreme mobility.

Ms. Thurston is the Visual Arts teacher at Dixon H. S. and teaches private art lessons afterschool for children and adults. Her art is on display for show and sale at her gallery, Topsail Art Gallery, Racine Gallery in Wilmington and SunsetriverMarketplace, Calabash.

“ It is my hope to give the artists and new businesses in the area the feeling of being welcomed and have a place to show their art and many other creative talents!”

From this hope the following show was created:

The Kiwanis Club of Hampstead awarded five $500.00, Robert Carpenter Memorial Scholarships to the following students;
Jansen Elise Barber, of Hampstead, a senior at Topsail High School who will be attending East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.
Corey James Godwin, of Greenville, NC, a senior at Topsail High School who will be attending the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado.
Brittany Lynn Zinser, of Hampstead, a senior at Topsail High School who will be attending NC State University in Raleigh, NC.
Samantha L. Herrick, of Rocky Point, a senior at Heide Trask High School who will be attending UNC at Chapel Hill, NC.
Cara Suzannah Harrison, of Burgaw, a senior at Heide Trask High School who will be attending UNC at Wilmington, NC.
Joan Carpenter presented the Robert Carpenter Memorial Scholarships to the five students and wished them success in all of there future in devours.

GARY SCHWARZ SPEAKS TO HAMPSTEAD KIWANIS

This past Thursday at a meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Hampstead, Gary Schwarz owner of Pender Pines Nursery was the program speaker. Gary and his wife Sharon who is the firm’s bookkeeper and advisor started Pender Pines Nursery eleven years ago next to the Senior Center on highway 17 in Hampstead. Gary’s imagination and work ethics have created a garden center unequaled in the area. Along with a pond filled with koi surrounded by flowers and plants, there is an arboretum with a pathway through the woods following a bubbling creek with markers identifying an abundance of plant life. The most recent addition is a large nursery building equipped with computerized watering and light systems that create the best flowers year round. Gary, his son and his employers have the nursery knowledge to help customers with their questions and purchases.

Gary’s presentation to the Hampstead Kiwanis Club had numerous tips for members with gardens regarding watering, fertilizing and soil composition. For his knowledge and efforts, Gary was recently chosen as President of the NC Flower Growers Association. For the best flowers, plants and trees in the area, a visit to your local nursery and garden center like Pender Pines is a must.

What is frozen custard?

Dating back to the early 1900’s, frozen custard is a cold dessert that is thought of as highly superior to ice cream, made with eggs in addition to cream and sugar. One main difference between custard and ice cream is the creation process.

Ice cream is made using a process called overrun, in which air is blended into the mixture of ingredients until its volume increases by approximately 100%, meaning half of the final product is composed of air. By comparison, custard is blended much slower and may have an overrun as low as 20%. The low percentage of overrun and the egg yolk give frozen custard a thick, creamy texture and a smoother, softer consistency when compared to ice cream. In addition, frozen custard is most often served at 18 degrees F rather than the -10 to -20 degrees at which ice cream is stored. The higher temperature allows you to really taste the goodness of the natural flavors without numbing your palate the way ice cream does.

Knights Of Columbus Set New Records For Charitable Giving And Volunteer Service

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SET NEW RECORDS FOR CHARITABLE
GIVING AND VOLUNTEER SERVICE

The Knights of Columbus announced today that it has set new records for charitable giving, and volunteer service hours in 2007. The results of the Order’s Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity for the year ending December 31, 2007 show that total contributions to charity at all levels reached $144,816,004.00 million – exceeding the previous year’s total by more than $1 million. The survey also shows that reported number of volunteer hours by Knights for charitable causes grew to 68,695,768 million hours, up more than 440,000 hours from 2006. There were 393,030 Knights of Columbus blood donors during the year, and Knights made more than 5.5 million visits to the sick and bereaved.

Cumulative figures show that during the past decade, the Knights of Columbus has donated $1.28 billion to charity, and provided in excess of 612 million hours of volunteer service in support of charitable causes.

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest lay Catholic organization, with 1.75 million members in the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Central America and Poland.

St Jude the Apostle Council 12281 of the Knights of Columbus of Hampstead, NC

received the above news on Friday, June 7^th from the Knights of Columbus office of New Haven, Connecticut.

The Knights of Columbus of St Jude the Apostle, Council 12281 recently distributed Operation Lamb Funds of over $14,000.00 to 10 local schools, a nursing home and the Pender County Special Olympics and nine State Agencies to help the intellectually disabled children with donations collected in 2007 at three Food Lions and Harris Teeter. The Knights are collecting for Operation Lamb, 2008 at Food Lion on July 4, 5 and 6^th. Operation Lamb program in North Carolina was named after the biblical quotation “whatsoever you do to the Least Among My Brethren, that you do also to me.” (Matthew 25:40) The special children and the Knights thank the public for there past generous donations.

Bridge Work on Rt. 210 Nearing Completion

According to North Carolina Department of Transportation Resident Engineer Chad Kimes the bridge work on Rt. 210 near Rt. 17 should be completed by Friday, June 13, 2008.

This has been the cause for the rerouting of traffic from Rt. 210 between Rt. 17 and "4 Corners" in Sneads Ferry, North Carolina. Having the bridge open again is great news to many reducing the travel time getting out to Rt. 17 and/or Jacksonville, North Carolina.

John R. Morgan Elected Chair of the North Carolina Association of CPAs

Raleigh, North Carolina — Greensboro resident and Salisbury native John Robert Morgan, CPA, JD, has been elected 2008–09 Chair of the North Carolina Association of CPAs (NCACPA), the only statewide organization for CPAs.

Morgan is a sole practitioner, working primarily in areas of estate planning, probate, and business planning. He was licensed as an attorney at law in 1973 and obtained his CPA certificate in 1984.

Prior to being elected Chair of NCACPA, Morgan served on the Board of Directors from 2000–2003 and Executive Committee from 2002–2003; and acted as Treasurer from 2005–007 and Chair-Elect from 2007–2008. He is also an active member of NCACPA’s Professional Development Committee. Morgan has been an instructor for NCACPA seminars in the areas of personal financial planning, retirement planning, business planning, and estate planning. He received the Outstanding Speaker Award in 1996, 2001, and 2002.

In addition to his twenty-four years of membership with NCACPA, Morgan is a member with the North Carolina Bar Association and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He serves on the North Carolina Bar Association’s Tax Council and is Treasurer of the Greensboro Bar Association. He has led courses in various areas of estate planning law and tax law for the Bar Association and acts as a mentor to first-year law students at Elon University School of Law.

In his role as Chair, Morgan will also serve a three-year term on the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ Council, where he will represent North Carolina on national issues.

Antivirus and AntiSpyware Protection in Sneads Ferry

Being an online computer professional in Sneads Ferry I am often asked how to prevent personal computer problems due to a virus or spyware. Here I shall share a little secret that may help those in the area as well as some elsewhere around the world.

First, I promote websites online as in "marketing" and not hardware (e.g. fix harddrives, monitors, printers, etc.). When it comes to doing major fixes to a personal computer, I trust professionals similar to most of you. As this is critical to my business, I take great care to find quality and service I can trust.

What do I use?

For antivirus protection on my personal computers I use AVG version 8 by AVG Technologies which can be downloaded at http://www.download.com/ (search for "free avg"). I have used AVG software now for the past few years with great success while others I have spoken with run into problems using other antivirus software (e.g. Norton, McAfee, etc.).

I also use Microsoft Windows Defender for additional spyware protection as there is more to computer threats than the multitude of virus applications.

Where do you go for service?

When I first moved to the Sneads Ferry, North Carolina area, I spoke with several business professionals that relied on their computers extensively. One business kept being mentioned repeatedly with many recommendations at that was Hampstead Electronics (Radio Shack) in Sneads Ferry. Specifically, Will Beauchamp, the computer technician there was often labeled the "saviour" for many computers thought to be completely lost due to virus attacks, spyware and/or hardware failures.

Will has an extensive background in personal computers and stays abreast of the latest challenges and fixes related to the above mentioned issues regularly. 1st Annual Top Gun Challenge, Scheduled for July 11th-12th

Winston Salem, NC – The Top Gun Challenge is an event that features North Carolina’s elite high school quarterbacks. Registration for this event is open to all incoming High School Quarterbacks. The Challenge will be held July 11th-12th in Winston Salem, NC at Wake Forest University. Each Quarterback will be evaluated, instructed, and tested in 7 events that will produce the QB1 Top Gun Champion. Quarterbacks will only be competing against quarterbacks from their state with the champion moving on to the Top Gun Challenge Championship in Tulsa, OK July 25th-26th.

Event one, Mental Testing, challenges each quarterback’s understanding of the game and assesses his leadership qualities. Event two, Physical Testing, is a mini-combine format that tests over-all athleticism, strength and speed.

Events three through seven, On-The-Field-Events, tests the speed, mobility, accuracy and arm strength of each quarterback. These 5 on-the-field-events will be held Saturday, July 12th, 7:00 at Wake Forest University. Friends, family and high school football fans are invited to attend this portion of the challenge.

The Top Gun Challenge has been held in Northwest Arkansas for the past five years but has expanded this year to include nine states (NY, PA, NC, CO, OH, NJ, CO, OK, OR) and a Top Gun Championship in Tulsa, OK.

The Top Gun Challenge is a Darin Slack Quarterback Academy Event. DSQA began training quarterbacks in 1988. Since its inception, The Academy has trained over 16,000 aspiring athletes, and has seen many go on to excel at the collegiate and professional levels, most recently, Matt Flynn of the 2007 BCS National Champion LSU Tigers.

Please join us for the grand opening of Studio J, Sneads Ferry’s premiere dance studio on Sunday March 30th from 3:00pm to 6:00pm located directly behind the Curves Building off of Highway 210. Studio J offers a variety of dance classes and styles and specializing in Tap, Jazz and Stylized Ballet. We offer Zumba, Clogging, Modern, Hip Hop, Line Dance and Latin Ball room styles also. Whether you are just looking for a fun way to get or stay in shape or you are looking for a serious physical, mental and artistic workout, you don’t have to look any further. Studio J has something for all ages!

Studio J’s Artistic Director, Janet Beam holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Dance from The University of North Carolina At Greensboro. She has an extensive background in dance performance ranging from soloist in the Charlotte Regional Ballet and Central Piedmont’s Dance ensemble, “Dance Central”. She has performed in more than 20 classical repertoires and also numerous original choreographies directed by Gay Porter of Regional Ballet Theatre and also Katharyn Horne of the Metropolitan Opera House/American Ballet Theatre of New York. North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper to Present Two Prestigious Awards at Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina’s Statewide Conference

NC Attorney General Roy Cooper will join over 400 child advocates and leaders from across the state to recognize the personal achievement of two exemplary North Carolinians. The prestigious Donna Stone and Blue Ribbon Parent Awards will be presented on Tuesday March 18 at 12:30pm in the Twin City Quarter Conference Center of Winston-Salem, NC. Attorney General Cooper decided to personally recognize the award recipients because in his words:

“All children deserve a safe and caring place to grow and learn. We’re grateful for caring people who work to stop child abuse and help children across our state.”

The Donna Stone Award recipient, Mr. Cleveland Hunt, was nominated by the adoption unit of Nash County Department of Social Services for his exemplary initiative in raising awareness of the “Safe Surrender” of newborns. Mr. Hunt, a paramedic in Nash County, turned a personal encounter with two abandoned newborns into an independent enterprise to raise awareness of Safe Surrender locations. Mr. Hunt started by raising awareness as well as raising over $1,800 to design and print signs. These signs clearly indicate Nash county fire and rescue stations as locations where young mothers can safely surrender their infants without fear of prosecution. Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina gives the Donna J. Stone Memorial Award to an individual or group with a demonstrated commitment to child abuse prevention in memory of the significant contribution of Donna J. Stone, who founded the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse in 1972.

The Blue Ribbon Parent Award recognizes the initiative of a parent and community leader. Ms. Beth Taylor is the first recipient of Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina’s Blue Ribbon Parent Award. Ms. Taylor began her engagement with prevention efforts in the “Families and Schools Together” program at Old Fort Family Resource Center. Over the past eight years, Ms. Taylor’s involvement encouraged community activities from the donation of more than 400 blankets for needy families to establishing the “Circle of Parents” program at Old Fort Family Center. The Blue Ribbon Parent Award recognizes parent leaders whose involvement in local programs expands awareness, services, and support to others in their community.

Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina is a statewide, citizen-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and neglect in all its forms. With a network of over 350 agencies and professionals across the state, Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina turns information into action by promoting effective community-based prevention programs, public awareness activities, educational initiatives, and training programs. Chimney Swift Tower, New to Sneads Ferry

When Jim Fulcher asked his wife, Virginia, what she wanted for Christmas last year, she said a Chimney Swift Tower. The requested gift was not the type of thing a woman can wear on her finger or dangle from her earlobes and definitely not easily shown to friends at lunch, but she had read in the Jacksonville Daily News that Chimney Swift habitat was declining in our area due to the capping of chimneys, loss of tree cavities and new construction methods. Virginia has always been impressed with the benefits Chimney Swifts, who are insectivores, offer our environment and mulled over the information contained in a Letter to the Editor long enough to feel compelled to do something about it. Jim and Virginia share a waterway enjoyed by an array of wildlife. For many years, the nature loving couple has continued to supplement wild birds’ diets and provide condos or gourds for Purple Martins when nesting time rolls around each spring. After going on the Internet and downloading schematics for a tower and an acceptable materials list from www.chimneyswifts.org, Jim recruited another builder to help him construct the tower. “It took a few weeks or more to complete the twelve-foot tower, due to waiting out wet weather conditions and allotting time for the concrete to thoroughly set up,” Jim told me when he called. Although I hoped when putting out the word that chimney swifts were in need of alternate habitat to encourage them to return to our area, many months ago, I had no idea anyone had taken the “verbal” yellow flag and thrown it down. Jim invited me to Sneads Ferry to take a look at the tower he built for Virginia (and the Chimney Swifts, of course). My husband and I jumped in the car that day and within twenty five minutes I was absolutely thrilled to be standing next to a swift tower I had only dreamed someone would care enough to ask about, let alone build on their own. Jim sounded confident and proud when he said he “reinforced everything to ensure it will withstand hurricane force winds.” He dug a foundation platform so deep; he needed twenty bags of cement to fill it. Angled, iron girders (wider than the schematic called for) were set in place to form an extremely sturdy base. Finished this past week, the twelve-foot tall swift tower, which Chimney Swifts like better than the eight-foot according to something Jim read, stands in waiting along Swan Point off Stump Sound in Sneads Ferry. So “yes, Virginia, we can honestly say there is a Santa Claus, well . . . a Santa’s helper, also known as your husband,” who made this special and most unique Christmas present, a Chimney Swift Tower, happen. Virginia can’t wait for the first migratory Chimney Swift couple to show up from South America’s Amazon Basin and check out their new digs. Although, the tower is large enough to house quite a number of roosting pairs of swifts, Virginia says she will be thrilled to see just one couple this year. Most stories have a moral–this one has a few, but the one I like most is: The little things we do can make a very big and positive difference. When your words mean so much to someone else, they become powerful. You may or may not find out what effect or influence they've had, but just keep doing your part to make the world a better place and know others, like Jim and Virginia, will to.
