Public Information Sessions Scheduled on Proposed 2010/2011 Onslow County Budget

(Onslow County)  Onslow County Government will conduct four public information sessions on the Proposed 2010/2011 Budget. The meetings are currently scheduled to be held as follows:

    June 16th        10:00 am        Onslow County Museum
    June 16th          6:30 pm        Jacksonville City Hall
    June 17th         10:00 am        Holly Ridge Town Hall
    June 17th           6:30 pm        Swansboro Town Hall

These four public information sessions are imperative so that the public can be informed about the financial profile of Onslow County and the important facets of this proposed budget.  The budget has been made available for public review on the Onslow County website at www.onslowcountync.gov as well as at the following locations:

Onslow County Administration Office, 4024 Richlands Highway, Jacksonville
and
Onslow County Public Library Branches

·    Richlands, 299 S. Wilmington Street
·    Sneads Ferry, 242 Sneads Ferry Road

The public information sessions are in addition to the one statutorily-required public hearing before the Board of Commissioners, which will be held during the regularly scheduled meeting of the Onslow County Board of Commissioners on June 21, 2010, 7:00 pm at Jacksonville City Hall.

PUBLIC HEARING ON THE PROPOSED 2010/2011 ONSLOW COUNTY BUDGET

(Onslow County)  The Onslow County Board of Commissioners will conduct a public hearing on the Proposed 2010/2011 Budget during their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, June 21, 2010, at 7:00 p.m.  The hearing will be held in Council Chambers, Jacksonville City Hall, 815 New Bridge Street, Jacksonville.  Comments should be limited to no more than five minutes per speaker. 

Comments may be submitted prior to the meeting by email to:  budgetcomments@onslowcountync.gov.

Comments may also be submitted by US Mail or in person, but should be sent no later than Monday, June 14, 2010 to the following address:

Onslow County Board of Commissioners Keeps Promise to Voters

(Onslow County)  Onslow County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution at the May 18, 2010 meeting that directs County Manager Jeff Hudson to deliver the Fiscal Year 2011 Proposed Budget with a property tax rate that does not exceed the amount of revenue neutral less one cent on the property tax rate.  This action is in accordance with the promise given to voters of the County as part of the public education campaign for the Article 46 local option sales and use tax referendum.   

Chairmen W.C Jarman remarked, “It will be a good day for Onslow County property owners.  They will see that a promise made is a promise kept.”  With the overwhelming support of the sales tax referendum on May 4^th,  the Board of Commissioners are moving ahead with the enactment of the sales tax which should begin in January 2011.   

Onslow County staff is still working on the proposed budget recommendation, which will be delivered to the Board of Commissioners by June 1^st.

Onslow Tax Office to Conduct Revaluation Presentation

The Onslow County Tax Office will conduct an informational presentation on the 2010 countywide property revaluation on Monday, November 9, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. in the Jacksonville High School Cafeteria, 1021 Henderson Drive, Jacksonville, NC.

The presentation will provide a general overview of the revaluation process, examples showing comparisons of recent real estate transactions to the current assessed values, information regarding the potential impacts, and the appeals process. There will be an opportunity for questions at the end of the session. The general public is invited to attend.

Let (Janet Bowen) Your Representative Know Your Opinions About Taxes

Good Afternoon,

As you well know, our Legislators recently completed a very challenging session in Raleigh. It is anticipated the forthcoming short session (commencing May 2010) will be even more of a struggle with rising cost demands and limited revenue options. In anticipation of these difficulties, the CCNCER Board started work early to formulate next session’s agenda. With scarce resources available to the Legislature, we will have to be selective and focused in crafting an agenda that will meet with favor. An important part of this planning process is the gathering of input from those we represent.  Towards that end we need your help.


With the likelihood of a forthcoming tax increase, which of the following tax reform measures would be most acceptable to you, please highlight your choices:

- An increase in the state income tax rate?
- A sales tax on services (beauty parlors, banking services, broadband services, etc)?
- An increase in the state sales tax?
- An increase in utility taxes?
- A sales tax on repair labor?
- Eliminating/reducing tax breaks for certain industries
- Implementation of a vehicle mileage tax
- Expansion of the franchise tax base
- Other? (give us your ideas)
