Onslow County Parks & Recreation: February Events

VALENTINES FOR TROOPS
The Onslow County Parks & Recreation Department, Onslow County Board of Education and The Marine Corps Community Services, New River Air Station is proud to sponsor “Valentine for Troops”. The deadline for turning in the cards is 5:00 pm. Monday February 1.   The criteria are as follows:
ü       All cards must be made with paper.
ü       You may use any type of materials such as cotton-balls, crayons, markers, glitter, felt, etc. 
ü       INCLUDE NAME, GRADE, SCHOOL & CITY ON THE BACK OF THE CARD.
All cards should be either mailed to or dropped off at the Onslow County Parks & Recreation Department at 1244 Onslow Pines Road, Jacksonville,  NC  28540. The cards will be distributed to our Troops.  Call: 347-5332 or visit: www.onslowcountync.gov/parks

BOWL FOR YOUR HEART

The Onslow County Parks and Recreation Department, Onslow Memorial Hospital, and The Bowlarena are sponsoring the “Bowl for Your Heart” program Sunday, February 7, 2010 at the Bowlarena.  The event is open to the public and begins at 1:00 until 4:00 p.m.   The cost is $3.00 per person (includes shoes and one game). All proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Association.  Participants will receive free door prizes. Blood Pressure Check will be available. VALENTINE COOKIES

The Onslow County Parks and Recreation Department, North Carolina Cooperative Extension and Taylor’s Piggly Wiggly are sponsoring two free Valentine Cookie Sessions on “Decorate Your Own Valentine Cookies” Saturday, February 13th, 2010 at the Onslow County Multipurpose Complex, Hwy. 258.  The first session begins at 9:00 am second session begins at 11:00 am.  Open to children age 5 - 12.  Call 347-5332 pre-register before February 10h.   Visit: www.onslowcountync.gov/parks

CHEERLEADING/SPIRIT CONTEST

The Onslow County Parks and Recreation, Brumbaugh, Mu & King, PA, & Pizza Hut are sponsoring a Cheerleading Contest on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Jacksonville High School. Squad Registration ends February 24th, 2010.  Check in at 9:00 a.m. Competition begins at 10:00 a.m.  The first 100 to register on a squad will receive a free Pizza Coupon.  Registration is by squad only!  The cost is $10.00 per squad member. (Includes a T-shirt)  Squads must have a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 20 members. There are 2 Sections of competition: Open (Open to the general public) and Recreation (All squad members must have participated in the County Youth Cheerleading program during 2009-10) with 3 Age Divisions: Minor (7-9 years of age), Midget (10-12 years of age), and Intermediate (13-16 years of age).  Registration Packets and a list of the rules/regulations may be picked up from the Onslow County Parks & Recreation Department at 1244 Onslow Pines Rd.  Jacksonville, NC  28540.  Free admission for Friends and Family Call 347-5332 or visit: www.onslowcountync.gov/parks

NATURE PROGRAMS - Sssknakes



The Onslow County Parks and Recreation Department and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science are sponsoring two Nature Sessions on “Sssnakes” Sunday, February 28th, 2010 at Jacksonville High School in the cafeteria.  The first session, begins at 2:30 p.m.  The second session, begins at 3:30 p.m.  Learn all about these slithery sensations up-close. Examine a number of living non venomous snakes and discover how to study snakes safely the program is free and open to the public.  An adult must accompany children under 12 years of age.   Call: 347-5332 visit: www.onslowcountync.gov/parks

ONWASA tells Nine On Your Side that a leak in a 12” water main may affect up to 1,000 customers in Sneads Ferry and North Topsail Beach this morning and afternoon.

Areas affected: Big Hammock Point, Shell Drive, Tradewinds, New River Inlet, Grandview, and Chadwick Shores until approximately 3:00 pm.
